Fonts For Our Poster

As part of the brief we were given we have been assigned to create a digi-pack for the bands new album release and also a poster. As all three of us in the group have had experience with using Corel Photo Paint in design and in our free time we thought we would use this to create the poster and the digi-pack as it provides a useful amount of features that we can use to maipulate images and typography in order to make a successful and effective advertising campaign for both.
We decided that we should start by trying to find some effective typogrpahy for our poster, deciding that the poster was the easier option to start with as we may need to refresh our memories having not used Corel in a while. We set about looking for fonts on a free font website which is called urbanfont.com. We decided to use this as we know we have a very minuscule budget and cannot afford to pay for fonts on the Internet as they can prove quite expensive.

Here are some of the fonts we looked at which we thought were suitable:
This one we thought was effective as the song is very summery happy and the hippy-esque element of the typography gives a good vibe and links well with the type of music the band is creating. Also the flowers on the font link in with the pictures of daisies we took in our initial research.

This typography we also liked as it looked quite happy and fun. Due to the slanted letters it looks quite comical and adds to the non-serious element of the poster we want to add almost a happy-go-lucky element to the bands promotion.
This is another font we fount, i quite liked the fact that some of the letters capitalised and some were not i think it gave quite a unique effect to the font that others do not offer. Also the letters seem to be quite childlike again adding to the happy element we are trying to create through the advertising.

This is the final font we decided to look at i think it is particularly effective due to its simplistic aesthetics however we thought in the
end it was too simplistic and although it is bold does not stand out particularly well.

Initial Research for Mini Project

These are some photos which Hannah a member of our group took recently. They almost give a mood board effect and give an indication of what kind of theme we are going for in our short music video.
We want to create a summery happy theme as it suits the style of the song and the acting which will be featured in the video hence the pictures of daisies.

Album Cover Analysis

This is the front cover of the album by Eminem Encore. I choose this front cover based on the imagery it used, as personally this is not my particular taste in music. However i felt the imagery was strong and at times shocking.

The front cover of the album shows a man (Eminem) standing on a stage taking what looks like his final bow after maybe completing a tour for example. The curtains behind him are closing as if symbolising the end of his life. The claret colour of the curtains connotes blood and also re-illiterates the 'end' of his life. Further to this his tie is also red connoting this rather dark mysterious feeling of suspense.
The man seems to have his arm bent looking as if he is trying to hide something behind him. At first glance with the combination of the curtains closing and the dark feeling connoted through use of colour, speculates his intention to hurt people with a possibly a weapon he has hidden. A sense of mystery is further connoted through the image of the audience, the fact the backs of their heads are the only visible feature of their body this connotes further mystery in terms of the intentions of the main character on stage. The sticker in the bottom right hand corner of the album cover displays 'Parental Advisory' this connotes the genre of the music as it is clear that the music on the album contains expletives adding to the gritty genre of hip hop. Aesthetically the cover uses bold dark colours in order to attract attention to the possible customer. The typography is bold and white is used as a sharp contrast to further attract attention.

These further confirm the suspicions created on first glance of the album cover over the intentions of the main character. The imagery featured on the album cover is again used on the inside album cover. The image is the same however it is from a different perspective showing the gun clasped in his hand. Looking at the album cover in detail, it is clear that the audience are throwing red roses on to the stage, this shows further connotations of death and possibly suicide. The second image on the right of the inside CD case, this shows the main character himself with the gun in his mouth as if attempting suicide it is then clear to the customer if they look inside the CD case that his intentions are to commit suicide and possibly kill many of his audience. I was particularly interested in using this CD cover as I believe the imagery used is effective as it almost tells a story without words in a very versatile way.

Mini Project

We have been issued a mini project in the remaining weeks until we split up for the summer in Media. We have been set a brief of a short music video in which we must include lip sinking to conform with the stereotypical conventions of the atypical music video. In class we were presented with six songs in which each group (around 6 separate groups) had to pitch each of their ideas for the songs in which they wanted. We decided to focus our pitch on the song "Sha La La La Lee" by "Small Faces". We made our decision based on the fact we had the strongest ideas for the songs video. We have been issued a few deadlines including the deadline for initial planning on our music video (including analysis of a CD and music video). This deadline has been set for Friday 18Th June. We have also been set a deadline for further research in mid September. We have decided to remain in the same group as we did for AS, as we feel we worked well and got on with each other in order to create an effective opening sequence earlier this year.
